This class is designed to inspire young musicians by exposing them to the fun of playing various instruments. Exposure to wonderful works and actually being able to see, touch and play instruments gives our young musicians an appreciation of music and how instruments (and musicians) all work together in an orchestra. Students in this class will be introduced to the instruments of the orchestra through wonderful orchestral pieces composed just for children, having the opportunity to play various instruments of the orchestra, enjoying teacher and student performances of various instruments, and engaging in games and hands-on activities.
Thursdays 4:30 - 5:00
Follows Crescendo schedule
Nutcracker: Nov 12 - Dec 17
Students will learn all about the much-loved story and ballet, The Nutcracker and about The Nutcracker Suite by Tchaikovsky. The Nutcracker is a two-act ballet, with a score by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.
The focus during session 2 will be on the percussion section of the orchestra, and students will have the opportunity to play and learn a wide variety of percussion instruments such as xylophones, snare drums, bass drums, roto-toms and much more . We will also continue to listen for instruments from all orchestral sections and refine students' music listening skills.
Carnival of the Animals: Jan 8 - March 24
The Carnival of the Animals, composed by Camille Saint Saens, was written for selected instruments and consists of 14 movements. Most of the movements represent a specific animal such as The Swan, The Elephant, and the Lion. This engaging musical suite is a wonderful way for students to learn to discern the various instruments they are hearing, as each of the selections uses a limited number of instruments.
Students will enjoy a variety of activities related to this musical suite, with a focus on learning about stringed instruments. Students will have the opportunity learn about and play a variety of stringed instruments.
Peter and the Wolf: April 7 - May 26
In 1936, Sergei Prokofiev was commissioned by the Central Children's Theatre in Moscow to write a new musical symphony for children. The intent was to cultivate "musical tastes in children from the first years of school". Prokofiev composed Peter and the Wolf in just four days.
In this symphony, each instrument represents an animal or object in the story, and students will refine their listening skills by trying to "find" each of the characters or objects represented.
The focus during session 3 will be on the woodwind instruments of the orchestra. Students will have the opportunity to see, hear, and play various woodwinds such as the recorder, flute, and more during the session. They will also gain a deeper understanding of Peter and the Wolf and the orchestra through hands-on activities and fun games which bring the story to life.
