In this course, the students will learn the fundamentals of robotics and the applications for robots in the real world. In Sessions II and III the Cyprus STEM team designed and built the tele-operated Pluto Rover Module (PRM), a large 6x6 semi-autonomous vehicle. They learned to remotely pilot and navigate it all around the school via long-range wireless control and wireless video cameras and displays. The PRM serves as a “rover” to be used on the simulated Pluto mission, and the instruments for data acquisition will represent the satellites deployed during the mission. If you’re new to Cyprus, feel free to stop in after school and see our projects and classes.
During Session IV, additional instruments will be added to the PRM include exploration sensors and more cameras, and the PRM will be taken outside of the Cyprus school and into the next phase of mission simulation on the grounds surrounding Cyprus. Students will also be re-introduced to Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs, flying robots, or ‘drones’) and learn to operate them as well. Dr. Vogt will be bringing in his multi-copters and aircraft and demonstrating them on the Cyprus grounds and in the public park next door. Students passing all pilot training requirements will be allowed to pilot the PPRM Rover and UAVs.
