This class taught by research scientist, Dr. Vogt, combines CAD and CAM and introduces students to both computer design andcomputer fabrication of real physical objects (3D printing!) The students will be introduced to fundamental CAD/CAM processes and procedures of modern engineering and manufacturing.
A popular and effective commercial CAD program from Trimble will be used. It is called SketchUpMake2013 and can be installed on the student’s own PC or Mac and taken home. Students will learn how to visualize objects and systems in 3 dimensions. They will learn how to design and construct complex structures by replicating simpler primitive components. This 3D modeling is both useful and fun, and is popular in both engineering and in arts and crafts.
Students will have access to a latest generation 3D printer and will learn about direct-from-computer-to-manufacturing fabrication and use fused-deposition modeling (FDM, 3D printing of sturdy parts) in a wide range of colors.
Students will get to make and keep all the parts, jewelry, toys, and objects they design and build.
Fridays 1:00 - 2:00 - 3rd - 6th grade
Fridays 2:00 - 3:00 7th Grade +
